Why Is Lieutenant William Kelly Fired?

Seven months ago， long before the trial ever began， Kelly was dismissed for secretly giving to the teenager’s then-growing defense fund.

Kelly was assigned to patrol before being placed on administrative leave. After an inquiry determined that his acts violated city and departmental regulations， he was dismissed.

He filed a grievance， challenging each policy infraction and asserting his claims， including that his dismissal violated his right to free expression.

A hacking group known as ‘Distributed Denial of Secrets’ stole his name and email address from the fund and sent it to The Guardian， who published a piece that included his identity.

Within 24 hours of the news spreading， the Norfolk Police Department was inundated with requests to dismiss Kelly from people all over the world.

Kelly was sacked in April after the city determined that his words had ‘eroded’ the public’s faith in the police.
